CBD Lotion Recipe: How to Make CBD Topicals from Home

There are so many reasons to incorporate CBD into your lifestyle. Maybe you’ve got an ache that just won’t let up. Maybe you’re stumped about what to gift a devoted beauty routine friend for their birthday. Or maybe you’re looking for ways to incorporate the incredible health and skincare properties of CBD into your life while also saving money and reducing waste. Whatever the case may be, CBD lotion is a great product that promotes well-being and relieves pain – and you can easily make it from home.

In this article you will learn,

What is CBD Lotion?

CBD lotion is a natural moisturizing product derived from the oils of the Cannabis sativa plant. Unlike THC, the CBD oils are non-psychoactive, but they do contain anti-inflammatory ingredients, which helps relieve pain.

Combined with typical lotion ingredients, like vitamin E and water, CBD lotion is used by both professionals and everyday people who are interested in promoting healthy skincare and attacking pain relief with natural remedies.

Why Are People Using CBD Lotion?

More and more, people are taking their health and wellness seriously. This popular wellness movement includes protecting our skin, which is the largest organ of the body. Skin protects your body, regulates natural processes, and works to keep out harmful bacteria and pathogens. But in order for it to properly function, it needs to stay healthy.

People are looking to CBD lotion and other topicals to do this important work. Not only does CBD lotion have all the properties of regular lotion that maintain healthy skin – like hydration – it also mimics the body’s natural processes, helping you relax , promoting healthy skin regrowth, and applying the jam-packed vitamins and nutrients that CBD alone delivers in one organic package.

Different Ways to Use CBD Lotion

CBD Lotion for Pain Relief

CBD naturally interacts with the body’s systems. Because of this, CBD can reduce various types of pain that are associated with these systems. CBD is also extremely anti-inflammatory (thank you, vitamin B2 and Omega-3 and 6 fatty acids!), which helps users relieve both muscle and joint pain when applied topically.

CBD lotion is a natural, non-opiate remedy for treating pain. Whether you experience chronic pain, you’re an athlete, or you just get achy sometimes, CBD lotion is a great tool to use or gift a loved one.

CBD Lotion for Sunburns

CBD lotion is basically the go-to remedy for a sunburn. It’s chalk full of vitamins that not only hydrate the skin but heal wounds caused by the sun and help new skin grow. Vitamins A, B1, and E all help detox your bloodstream, prevent irritation, and promote a functioning immune system. Elements like iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc all actively work to repair skin from wounds and grow new skin. CBD lotion also combats the long-term consequences of sunburns.

If you’re trying to think up a gift your sun-happy friend for their birthday, consider making them CBD lotion. It’s the perfect post-beach/pool routine.

CBD Lotion for Inflammation

Inflammation can occur for many reasons. It can be extremely painful, especially if it’s caused by arthritis. Several studies have shown that CBD and CBD topicals are an effective way to treat various levels of inflammation. Vitamins B2 and B6, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, are the prominent properties in CBD lotion that reduce inflammation.

CBD Lotion for Headaches

Headaches are caused by multiple factors, including dehydration. But most are caused by either too much or too little blood flow to the brain, negatively impacting the brain’s oxygen levels.

When CBD lotion is applied to the skin, it helps the body relax. When the body relaxes, proper system processes resume, providing the correct levels of blood flow to the brain. CBD can also reduce a fast heart rate, allowing heart rhythm to return to normal and oxygen levels in the body to balance.

CBD Lotion for Relaxation

Whether you’re looking to settle in after a long day at work, trying to fall asleep, or just want to treat yourself, CBD lotion is the perfect way to relax. Its molecular makeup and vitamin properties reduce heart rate and hydrate the skin, helping you feel at ease without THC’s psychoactive effects.

CBD Lotion for Everyday Skincare

Lotion is a major part of any skincare routine, so why not choose a product that will not only hydrate and promote glowing skin, but that will also help maintain healthy skin.

The vitamins and omega fatty acids in CBD lotion mean that it’s working on two fronts to benefit your skin wellness: appearance and chemistry. While vitamins A, E, B2, and D fight wrinkles, reduce inflammation, and moisturize, Calcium, vitamin B1, and Zinc all work to heal wounds, promote healthy skin growth, detox the bloodstream, and strengthens the skin’s immune system.

CBD Lotion for Acne

It’s less commonly known that CBD lotion can be used to treat acne. Acne is caused by the overproduction of sebum, a naturally occurring oily substance on every human face. Whether your face is too oily or too dry, sebum is produced as a way to balance the moisture of your skin.

Research out of the lab at the University of Debrecen (Hungary) has shown that CBD inhibits lipid synthesis, essentially reducing the overproduction of sebum that causes acne. Acne is basically an inflammatory state, and we know that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, so it makes sense that CBD lotion would help relieve acne symptoms.

CBD Lotion for Eczema

Remember the sebum mentioned above? When the body doesn’t produce enough sebum (the opposite of acne), it causes dryness, itchiness, and even conditions like eczema and seborrhea.

CBD lotion helps regulate the various systems of the body, as it contains anti-inflammatory, pain-reducing properties. In addition, its core vitamins help moisturize and retain moisture on the skin.

A 2019 study showed that people with skin conditions like eczema found relief in using topical CBD, which reduced itching and even helped them sleep. Another study showed that topical CBD was an effective anti-bacterial product. This finding is extremely significant, as people with dry skin conditions can experience cuts and infections due to their skin cracking from dryness.

How to Make CBD Lotion from Home

CBD lotion and other topicals can be made at home with various consistencies. How you plan to use it will determine what kinds of bases you’ll want to use.

For instance, if you’re looking to apply a CBD product to areas of the body experiencing pain, you might consider creating a salve, which uses beeswax as a base. However, beeswax isn’t the best fit for facial CBD products, as it can be very thick. If you want to make a CBD product that is more versatile and can be used on the face as well as the body, CBD lotion with a water and oil base is the perfect fit for you.

CBD lotion is endlessly customizable, with multiple fragrances, CBD concentrates, and additional skin-soothing ingredients. No matter the recipe, you’ll need a few key items to get started.

CBD Lotion Materials

  • Double boiler for indirectly heating the ingredients. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can use a frying pan or saucepan and a glass jar (but you’ll have to be extra cautious about heat).
  • Measuring cups
  • Spoon
  • Spatula
  • Standing blender, immersible blender, or handmixer
  • Glass jars with lids

CBD Lotion Ingredients

This recipe yields approximately 2 cups of CBD lotion that is vegan, lightweight, and perfect for the face or body. Use it in the mornings after washing your face, to ease pain, or to moisturize throughout the day.

  • 1 cup of boiled or distilled water
  • 1/2 cup of sweet almond oil
  • 1/4 cup of coconut oil
  • 1/4 tablespoons of jojoba oil. If you don’t have jojoba oil, you can use grapeseed oil instead.
  • 5 tablespoons of coco butter or shea butter
  • 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil or rosemary antioxidant oil. (Not only will you get the benefits of these oils, but they act as natural preservatives too.)
  • 2 teaspoons of concentrated CBD oil
  • Essential oils of your choice for fragrance. We recommend lavender if you plan to use it before sleeping or to heal pains and headaches, eucalyptus and tea tree for anti-inflammatory/antibacterial purposes (great for acne and other skin conditions), or peppermint to relieve arthritis pain. If you plan for this CBD lotion to be an everyday lotion, choose a non-imposing smell that is more neutral.

CBD Lotion Recipe Step by Step Directions

Step #1

Sanitize your blender or immersible blender, bowl, and utensils. This is an incredibly important step because if they are not fully sanitized, your CBD lotion can grow bacteria or even mold. Use hot soapy water to clean these tools. Additionally, use rubbing alcohol or vinegar to swab the tools. Then let them air dry. Now, you’re ready to go!

Step #2

In the double boiler, combine the sweet almond oil, shea or coco butter, coconut oil, and jojoba oil. Set the boiler on low heat. Stir occasionally until everything is melted and combined. If you do not have a double boiler, place these ingredients in a glass jar and place the glass jar in a saucepan or frying pan. Partially fill the pan with water, around the glass jar. The water acts as a sort of barrier to the oils, heating them slowly so they don’t fry.  Keep a close eye on the contents of the glass jar as the water heats, as you do not want them to burn. Stir occasionally until contents are melted and combined.

Step #3

Allow the mixture to cool before pouring into the mixer, blender, or immersible blender. Now let the mixture cool more until it’s room temperature. When it’s cooled – about an hour – it’ll look creamy and thick. Don’t let it become solid.

Step #4

When the mixture is cooled, add the CBD oil, vitamin E or rosemary oil, and essential oils. (Careful with the essential oils. We recommend a few drops. Know that they go a long way!)

Step #5

Now, get to blending. As you blend the mixture, slowly drizzle distilled water in (or water that has been boiled but is now room temperature).

Step #6

Pour the lotion into a jar or whatever container you plan to store it in. Note that keeping the lotion in the fridge will increase the CBD lotion’s lifespan, but it will also make it less pump-able, if you plan to use a bottle with a pump.

CBD lotion is easy to make, and it’s a great addition to any wellness routine. It helps relieve aches and pains, and it can even help you fall asleep. Creating your own CBD lotion can be more economical than buying in the store, and it can help reduce plastic waste. Plus, you can customize your DIY CBD Lotion to your personal preferences and intended uses.
